Staff Week On The Hood Canal

The key staff arrived this afternoon ready to set up and start the long preparations for the camp season. Tomorrow the rest of the staff will be in to begin training and help set up. We're working hard to get everything in place for the in-coming scouts. By now the moon is up, the stars are bright, and we are enjoying some much needed relaxation and fellowship. I personally am excited to be in the position I am in this year, as camp director. Many of us are taking on new roles in 2009, but all are happy to face our new opportunities. New opportunities bring new challenges to overcome. Very few things in this life are more gratifying than overcoming a challenge. I'm confident that the exceptional staff we've hired for 2009 will do a great job overcoming the challenges that lay ahead. Others before us set the bar high, we intend to exceed all expectations. This summer will be an adventure for EVERYONE who comes through our gate, Camper and Staffer alike. See you on the trail!

Productive work weekend sees progress at camp

The commissary roof has been completed!

All in all this was a VERY productive weekend for the Hahobas Scout Reservation. As mentioned the roof on the main commissary was completed. 6 trees were felled and chopped to make way for “Alex’s Place” up at C.O.P.E. The Pathfinder program/trail began to take shape by the end of the day, Saturday. Equally as important, troop 174 was here all weekend and completed the very helpful and arduous task of clearing brush near the staff cabins. I should also mention the LDS work party was here again to continue work on tent platforms in the Twana loop campsites and to finish the Sunset bowl (wheelchair ramp and lights). Chuck Johnston came out and assisted my brother, Kyle, in repairing the front porch on the Engineer’s Villa. John Ailport and crew took time to inventory and go through the program supplies that are here on sight. Art Wegner was able to procure several large cargo nets for use at the C.O.P.E. course. Lastly Sunday evening I was asked give a tour to an outside group that is interested in using camp in the spring for a small youth retreat. All in all it was a very very busy weekend, but also very exciting to see so many give so much. Thanks to all who were available to help!

Leaders' Guide delayed

I know people have been waiting for the Leaders' Guide to be published and we promise it is near completion. This week it goes for final approval. We hope to have the guide complete by March 23rd and posted here soon after.

The intent of the Camping Committee is that in future years the Leaders' Guide will be available starting February 1.

Waterfront work party

Work is starting to come together at work. John Ailport and Dick Minneman organized a work party for February 16-18 to work on the waterfront.

For those who are not as familar with camp, the waterfront program has exceeded the space that was available on the Lake Robbins waterfront. So the work party worked to expand the area by clearing brush and beginning to layout new teaching areas for summer camp. The expanded area will allow aquatics merit badge instruction within the controlled area.

Additional work was done near Twana Lodge to repair water damage and errosion to that building. Future work parties will continue these projects.

The waterfront expansion is expected to be completed in time for summer camp 2007.

The blog lives!

And so begins a new medium for information about Camp Hahobas, BSA. We are excited to offer the greater Scouting community an informal portal to what's going on and what's coming to Camp Hahobas.

This blog is maintained and posted to primarily by the Boy Scout Camping Sub-Committee of the Pacific Harbors Council. If you have any concerns please send them to webmaster@hahobas.org.
